4. Determination of chemical composition

As in the case of gases, there are no methods that are well suited to aerosol analysis. Methods are always time-delayed with respect to collection. Artifacts are always possible, and the non-universality of methods favors the analysis of certain compounds to the detriment of others. In all cases, methods differ for the analysis of the mineral and organic phases.

4.1 Organic matter analysis

In general, organic matter is extracted from the filter by ultrasonic extraction or in a soxhlet, using polar or non-polar organic solvents. The extract is concentrated, either by evaporation in a rotary evaporator or by passing through a flow of dry nitrogen, then purified on a SepPak-type column. Finally, it is taken up in another organic solvent compatible with the analysis....
