5. Mistakes to avoid
5.1 Do not allocate SIL levels to barriers that are not instrumented.
The notion of SIL is only applicable to instrumented barriers (covered by IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 standards). It makes no sense to say that a non-return valve is SIL 1. For all non-instrumented barriers, it is preferable to refer to the notion of Confidence Level introduced by INERIS in the OMEGA 10 guide.
