4. Our advice

4.1 Apply SIL recommendations as extensively as possible

To be able to justify a SIL level, IEC 61508 and 61511 define an approach that defines the actions to be implemented throughout the SIS lifecycle. The "calculatory" part, i.e. estimating the SIL level, is just one stage in a more global process that enables the SIL level selected to be justified.
