4. Choose preventive measures

Once completed, the cause tree can be used to identify several areas of work. Certain criteria can be used to select the most appropriate preventive measures, based on regulatory compliance, cost, timeframe, scope of application, etc.

The first step is therefore to identify the preventive measures. This is done simply by going back to each part of the cause tree, as described in the figure "Example of identifying preventive measures".
