4. Distinguish between amorphous and semi-crystalline thermoplastics

4.1 Amorphous thermoplastics

Amorphous thermoplastics are easier to weld than semi-crystalline ones, because their behavior is predictable. In fact, each degree of softening corresponds to a further degree of softening.

This makes it easier to solder amorphous from semi-crystalline.

  • The sealing range is wider (10 to 20°C amorphous, 1 to 3°C semi-crystalline).

  • The material gradually softens.

  • In the event of overheating, smell followed by smoke and color give the alarm.

  • Heating power is lower.

  • Cooling is rapid.
