1. Understanding the principle of hot air for thermoplastic welding
Hot-air welding allows the polymer to soften to such an extent that, in the presence of another compatible polymer in the same state, the two surfaces subjected to pressure come to marry or bond.
Thermoplastics do not melt, but simply diffuse polymer chains. This interpenetration concerns only a few nanometers of the surface of the two materials in contact.
It is therefore important that the two materials involved are compatible with each other. They must have the same :
surface tension,
melting point or type of fusion.
