3. Electromechanical converters

Electromechanical converters convert electrical energy into mechanical energy via magnetic fields. These include rotary electric motors, as well as limited-travel transducers used in mechanisms such as mechanical brakes and clutches, or hydraulic control elements.

3.1 Electric motors

Electric motors can have a variety of operating principles. Here, we'll concentrate on self-steering (electronically commutated) permanent-magnet synchronous motors, commonly known as brushless motors. The classic DC motor, which is in fact a mechanically commutated synchronous motor, shares many of the same features as permanent magnet self-steering synchronous motors, but has now been abandoned for applications requiring high performance, particularly in terms of service life...
