1. Understand the complexity of a disability situation
Before embarking on the design process, it's important to understand what a disability is.
While historically the notion of disability was linked to an impairment, more recent models propose to define it as the result of the interaction between personal factors, environmental factors and lifestyle habits. Conversely, a person with no impairment may find himself in a situation of disability when faced with an unsuitable environment: for example, a person with a stroller facing a staircase, or a person in a country whose language he does not speak, may be considered to be in a situation of disability. In this model, a situation of disability corresponds to a reduction in the realization of life habits (activities of daily living, such as getting around, communicating, working, shopping, washing, etc.), and therefore to a reduction in social participation.
