Thermochemical upgrading of biomass involves heating biomass to high temperatures in a non-oxidizing atmosphere (or in sub-stoichiometry in the case of partial oxidation). Schematically, three types of thermochemical biomass upgrading process have been developed at near-ambient pressures.
