Overview

ABSTRACT

Compared with mortars, incorporating polymers under the form of aggregates in cast is a less known and used method. This article presents recent advances in order to manufacture lightweight plasterboards via the addition of recycled polymers. The good compatibility of these two compounds allows for achieving mechanical strength as well as improved sound insulation and thermal properties. Various criteria concerning formulations have thus been established in order to comply with construction standards.

 INTRODUCTION

Recent developments in the field of construction materials have focused in particular on composite materials incorporating waste materials in their composition, with the aim of determining the compatibility of these waste materials with the matrix in which they are incorporated. The aim is to obtain new products offering interesting and durable properties, while at the same time meeting the demands of the construction industry.

Social values within human societies are evolving rapidly with economic development and urbanization. They are gradually shifting from the production of consumer goods to concerns about improving living conditions and respecting the environment. As a result, society is becoming increasingly aware of the desirability of sustainable development, which is reflected in a proactive policy of recycling household waste and industrial by-products to prevent them from being dumped in landfill sites or burned in incinerators.

This article aims to contribute to sustainable development through the reuse of polymer-based wastes in the preparation of products for the construction market, in particular in the design of lightweight plaster with characteristics at least equivalent to those of conventional plaster. After describing plaster, its components and the methods used to lighten this type of material, examples of lightened plaster formulations are presented, with a detailed description of the final properties obtained.
