Conclusion

Dental radiology underwent its first major evolution in the 1980s with the advent of real-time, digitized intra-oral radiology (Trophy RadioVisioGraphy ^® ). This was followed by the more ergonomic ERLM (radioluminescent memory display), which provided an image in slightly delayed time, and gradually gained acceptance. It is only very recently, long after the transition from silver to digital, that 3D imaging has contributed to a major evolution in dental radiology practice, calling into question many indications. International literature and recommendations now recognize Cone Beam CT not just as an alternative to X-ray CT, but as a reference technique, registered in the nomenclature, for cross-sectional imaging in dentistry.
