5. Conclusion
Halophilic micro-organisms are renowned for providing high-value-added molecules for industry, such as PHAs, ectoins, hydrolases, biosurfactants and bioemulsifiers, etc., with extremely varied applications in fields ranging from agriculture to medicine. The fields of research and applications associated with halophilic microorganisms are numerous, involving a wide range of disciplines such as molecular biology, fermentation production, chemical modification, biomaterial synthesis and microbial ecology. However, the metabolic and genetic potential of halophilic microorganisms remains largely unexploited.
Recent advances in molecular biology now make it possible to exploit the metabolic potential of halophiles and improve performance for industrial applications.
