6. Environmental constraints

6.1 Pollutant emissions

The regulations governing gaseous pollutant emissions from diesel engines are becoming increasingly stringent in all countries (see table 3 ). The first consequence, given the lifespan of railway equipment (from 30 to over 40 years), is that older rolling stock does not comply, requiring major modernization and refurbishment operations.
