1. Definition of mass transit rail (MTF)

The MTF: neither metro nor commuter rail, and much more than commuter trains.

1.1 Comparison with metros

What they have in common :

  • high frequency: at least every 15 minutes, but with peak frequencies close to 120 seconds, similar to those of metros (which can go below 90);

  • very large flows (several tens of thousands of passengers a day);

  • the need to ensure that the configuration of platforms and interchanges is sufficiently large to handle the flow of passengers;

  • the structural importance of the exchange time required at each stop, i.e. the minimum time needed to allow all passengers to disembark from the train,...
