4. Direct pneumatic brake

As we saw at 3.4.1.3 , the disadvantage of the automatic air brake is its relatively long response time. While this is not a problem for train operation, it is a disadvantage when shunting locomotives.

Locomotives are often required to travel alone, between the depot and the train formation tracks. In depots, they have to operate in an environment where there are many obstacles, and where a fast-reacting brake is essential....
