8.1 The transition from steam to electric power
Since its inception and expansion in the 19th century, rail transport has continued to modernize and adapt to new technologies.
One of the most significant changes has undoubtedly been in the evolution of propulsion systems: steam locomotives drove the growth of the railroad for over a century before giving way to diesel and, above all, electric propulsion.
The principle of steam traction is to convert liquid water into steam under pressure, which is then used to provide motive power to the axles. The boiler is fueled by a combustible material, usually coal, but it can also run on wood, for example.
