5. The French rail network for freight

In France, the rail lines used by freight trains are located:

  • primarily on the National Rail Network (RFN);

  • but also on port channels;

  • or on terminal facilities (TEFs) or local networks (such as the regional line from Colombiers to Maureilhan in the Hérault department, for example).

5.1 The RFN and its Network Reference Document (NRD)

The National Rail Network (RFN), managed by SNCF Réseau, currently comprises 28,000 km of track, including 2,700 km of high-speed lines designed for passenger service.
