2.1 Issues

GPS (Global Positioning System) is an everyday tool, and one of the systems where data is omnipresent. In the case of GPS, we can't imagine any direct impact on safety, even if there may be surprising situations (absence of road, non-optimal route or contrary to signs, etc.), but the driver remains responsible for decisions, and GPS is only an aid to driving. New uses for GPS, such as train positioning, could have an impact on safety-related recommendations such as position measurement, accuracy, etc.

As we'll see later, the railway industry is a prime example of where data is omnipresent in system design, but it's not the only system. The nuclear, automotive and space sectors are all areas where data management can have an impact on safety....
