2. Diverse data sources for maritime applications

The rise of Big Data and connected objects is enabling marine environment observation technologies to evolve rapidly, and to adapt ever more closely to its specific features and constraints. Thus, the increasingly massive deployment of sensors, connected digital tools and real-time communications is driving a rapid increase in the amount of data collected and stored.

The maritime sector has tended to lag behind this technological trend, while other sectors (automotive, aeronautics, rail, etc.) have adopted it more readily. There are several reasons for this: the need to rely on highly reliable technologies, the difficulty of adapting digital technology to the constraints of the marine environment, the cost of telecommunications, the sector's "conservative" culture, and so on.
