Indirect converter

When the source network is alternating, a network converter feeds a machine converter: hence the term "indirect converter".

Rectifier

Direct AC-DC converter.

Inverter

Direct DC-to-AC converter.

Cycloconverter

Direct static AC/AC converter, working by sampling an input frequency; the output voltage is, at most, equal to one third of the supply frequency.

Pulse width modulation (PWM)

Control algorithms for voltage converters based on controllable blocking components (IGBTs), enabling near-sinusoidal output voltage waves to be obtained in the general case.
