3.1 Estimating the performance of vessels with screw propulsion

Validating numerical models of wind-powered ships is a complex issue. Indeed, these vessels are complex systems involving a number of different physics, and require a degree of multidisciplinarity during their development. Their implementation involves a number of multiphysics models (hydrodynamics, aerodynamics, thruster operation, complex interactions, etc.) which, taken separately, may eventually be qualified (wind tunnel for sails, tank tests or CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics – ) for hull strength or maneuverability), but there is currently no published data on the overall operation of such systems to be able to judge the degree of fidelity of their calculated performance.
