3. How to draw up the 5M diagram

This diagram can be used to analyze a measurement process and to determine the basic uncertainties arising from one of the following five causes:

  • measuring equipment ;

  • the measurement method ;

  • the material measured ;

  • the environment in which the measurement is performed ;

  • the manpower used, i.e. the operator carrying out the measurement.

In the example below, such a diagram is shown for the measurement of a resistance of around 120 Ω.
