6. Choosing an instrument management strategy
Everything that has been said above profoundly changes the way we think about managing a fleet of instruments. All the actions required to manage the quality of measuring instruments in an optimal and relevant way can be computerized, but we need to move away from the archaic and standard vision of calendar-based management towards what technology easily enables us to achieve in terms of "management of means of measurement": risk control, optimization of budgets, rapid detection of anomalies... which, in turn, leads to improved operator skills, notably through monitoring.
After years of "docile" but ineffective management (calibrations/verifications only validate the past, and are not predictive), metrologists need to manage their instrument fleets in such a way as to guarantee reliable measurements on a daily basis, now more than ever.
