    Overview

    ABSTRACT

The chemical modifications linked to smalt discoloration in historic paintings have been analyzed by the X-ray absorption spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. The micronic size of the X-ray beam and the wide range of energy provided by the LUCIA beam lines and DiffAds of the SOLEIL synchrotron have been determining in order to prove individually the smalt grains in microsamples from paintings from the National Gallery (London) and the musée du Louvre (Paris) collections. The XANES and EXAFS spectra registered at the threshold K of the coloring cobalt ion have proved that this change in color was associated with the coordination change in the cation.
