3. Chromatographic methods concerned
Today, chromatography encompasses a wide range of techniques, all based on the principle of selective retention of the constituents of a mixture on a fixed medium (open or filled column, plate, etc.), carried towards the outlet by a mobile fluid (gaseous, liquid, supercritical).
This fluid can be set in motion either by the action of a pressure difference (hydrodynamic flow in GC, LC, SFC), or by the action of an electric field (CE, ISCO), or by a combination of the two (CEC).
As the methods are many and varied, some authors prefer to speak of "separative sciences" rather than chromatography; most of them are described in detail in the treatise "Analyse et Caractérisation" in Techniques de l'Ingénieur :
