4. Conclusion

FT-IR spectroscopy is a useful and convenient method for studying cementitious materials. This characterization technique benefits from advantages such as a small amount of sample material, a short interpretation time and a simplified sampling process compared to other conventional material characterization methods. In addition, specific modes of analysis, such as the ATR mode, enable the surface of hydrated and hardened cement samples (paste, mortar, concrete) to be studied directly. However, the quantification potential of FT-IR spectroscopy for cementitious materials remains limited, and it is rarely used to investigate compounds present only in trace form.

In terms of applications, FT-IR spectroscopy can detect clinker and anhydrous cement phases such as C3S, C2S and C3A (but not C4AF). Synthesized hydrated powders are easily analyzed for the presence of hydrates...
