Definition of industrial robotic calibration

There is no precise definition of industrial robotic calibration. Mostly, we find notions derived from the practices of robot manufacturers or users. To avoid any confusion, we propose the following definitions, to which we will then refer, with the addition of a recent industrial notion of "absolute precision" robot (in fact, a robot that has been calibrated from the outset).

Note that the term calibration is also frequently used. We won't use it here, and recommend avoiding its use in favor of the noun étalonnage and the verb étalonner. Remember that calibration is the action of setting to gauge, the gauge being the inside diameter of a hollow cylinder and, by extension, an instrument used as a standard for checking mechanical production.
