Back in 1962, zoologist and biologist Rachel Carlson was already denouncing the ravages of pollution and pesticides on the environment, and predicting a silent spring when there would be no more birds to herald the return of fine weather. Her book, Silent Spring, was a huge popular success and prompted the US government to ban the use of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, better known as DDT.
