1.1 Functional aspects of packaging

Packaging fulfils a number of functions, both technical and commercial, which are presented in figure 1 :

• technical functions :

  • preservation: protection of the product from its environment, slowing down the effects of deterioration mechanisms, mechanical resistance to stress and bilateral product/environment exchanges (liquids, gases, energy, pressure, radiation, microorganisms, insects, rodents),

  • distribution: good condition of primary packaging in direct contact with the product, tightness,
