1. Different signs of quality and origin

The concept of quality and origin identification signs, a means of promoting agricultural, forestry, food and seafood products, was introduced into the French Code Rural et de la Pêche Maritime (CRPM) by the decree of December 7, 2006 (art. L. 640-2. 5 signs each attest to a specific quality:

  • Label Rouge: superior quality;

  • Appellation d'Origine, Protected Geographical Indication and Traditional Speciality Guaranteed: quality linked to origin or tradition;

  • Organic Agriculture: environmental quality and respect for animal welfare.

With the exception of the Organic Agriculture sign, SIQOs are a collective heritage; any operator who complies with the conditions laid down in the specifications for a SIQO can benefit from them.
