5.1 Regulatory status of spirulina
Spirulina has a dual status as a food, a food ingredient and a dietary supplement.
Indeed, it is first and foremost a foodstuff, recognized as such by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). As such, it is subject to the rules governing this type of product in the European Union. Regulation (EC) no. 178/2002 of the European Parliament and of the Council of January 28, 2002 defines a foodstuff as "any substance or product, whether processed, partially processed or unprocessed, intended to be, or reasonably expected to be ingested by humans".
