4. Economic aspects

In a market that is still in its infancy in France, but has reached maturity in the United States and Northern Europe, experience shows that there is a close link between the quality of a diagnosis and the cost of requalification work. This interdependence is economically significant. Underestimating the value of diagnostic studies (cost of investigation) generally leads to significant cost overruns when it comes to requalification work.

Example

reconnaissance of a coal distillation site, based on insufficient density and depth of drilling, led to the discovery of three tar tanks, whereas only one was supposed to exist during the rehabilitation work. The extra work required to process the additional quantities of tar and mobilize new processes was 30 to 50 times greater than the diagnostic savings.
