Signal inversion :

A method for recovering geophysical parameters such as aerosol optical properties from raw measurements, such as those shown in figure 3 .

Variational method :

A mathematical approach based on minimizing a cost function with respect to the variable sought. The cost function may be more or less complex, but it always takes into account the measurement, its estimation and measurement uncertainties.
