3. Odors and water legislation

The 1992 Water Act, now codified in Articles L. 214-1 to 11, makes works and activities (known as "IOTA") which have an impact on the aquatic environment (and which are not covered by the ICPE nomenclature) subject to an authorization or declaration regime, depending on the potential hazards posed by the installation.

The rules governing the operation of facilities covered by the water nomenclature are set out in various texts, depending on the activity of the facility. For example, wastewater collection, transport and treatment facilities are governed by the decree of June 22, 2007, while the spreading of wastewater treatment sludge is regulated by the decree of December 8, 1997 and the decree of January 8, 1998.
