1. Risk management issues

Many industrial accidents have left their mark on our collective memory. In some cases, they have influenced or led to changes in industrial risk management regulations. The following accidents are all considered major industrial accidents:

  • Feyzin (France) 1966: BLEVE of LPG sphere.

    Death toll: 17 dead, 84 injured, material damage several km away.

  • Flixborough (UK) 1974: explosion and fire at a chemical plant.

    The toll: 28 dead, many injured, facilities ravaged.

  • Seveso (Italy) 1976: explosion in a pesticide factory (dioxide contamination).

    Result: 1,800 hectares of contaminated land, evacuation of populations, 2,000 people poisoned.
