2.1 Linking products and biodiversity: an opportunity to create value
In 2005, the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment defined an initial way of understanding our society's relationship with biodiversity through ecosystem services, which are classified into four categories: provisioning services, regulating services, supporting services and cultural services. This classification was originally developed for awareness-raising purposes, but was subsequently used for operational purposes, such as the Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES) process, which provides incentives for the adoption of practices.
