Historically, IPPC regulations preceded IED regulations. It has now been replaced by the latter.
1.1 Objectives of IPPC regulations
To limit pollution, the first rules laid down in the 70s were based on a thematic approach, which consisted of defining minimum standards by sector: water, air, waste, etc. This approach proved insufficient to halt the progressive degradation of the environment.
