3. Water protection, health and regulation

Sustainable water management is based on a large number of international, European and national texts. The European Water Framework Directive of 2000 (WFD) and the Water and Aquatic Environments Act of 2006 (LEMA) are two central texts structuring public water policy in France, and are accompanied by a very rich body of legislation.

With regard to sanitation and access to drinking water, the Drinking Water Directive specifies certain principles.
