4. Plant selection: from screen trees to luminous plants

As we said in our introduction, plants are all too often regarded as chattels or as providers of services for us humans (shade, freshness). Certain proposals in the field of lighting go even further in the "commodification" of plants, and merit a debate that is as much ethical as it is economic or ecological.

4.1 Using trees as screens: a sacrifice for the good of the planet?

Landscape architects and ecologists sometimes suggest planting trees and shrubs to reduce light pollution. For example, the planting of a hedge along a roadside or the edge of a village is recommended to form a plant barrier that will limit the exposure of adjacent natural environments (meadows, ponds) to artificial light.
