1. Adsorption and adsorbents

1.1 Adsorption

Adsorption is the process whereby molecules of a fluid (gas or liquid) attach themselves to the surface of a solid. The phase of adsorbed molecules is called the "solute" or "adsorbate", and the solid is called the "adsorbent". The surface of the solid includes the external and internal surfaces created by the network of pores and cavities inside the adsorbent.

There are two types of adsorption process: physical adsorption or physisorption and chemical adsorption or chemisorption.

In the case of physical adsorption, adsorbate molecules are bound to the adsorbent surface mainly by Van der Waals forces, and by the forces of polarization, dipole and quadruple electrostatic interactions...
