2. Extensive natural pretreatment

Wherever possible, natural purification processes should be used. These include long-term storage and percolation through the soil.

2.1 Storage

Storage can have two objectives: to create a reserve that gives the distributor an additional degree of freedom in the hydraulic management of the resource, or to modify the quality of the raw water; in the most general case, both aspects need to be taken into consideration.

With a reserve of 24 to 48 hours, the main aim is to be able to dilute or even bypass an accidental pollution wave. This is an important objective when industrial zones are located upstream of the intake point.
