Since the 1990s, when terahertz waves became more readily exploitable, scientists' and industrialists' expectations regarding their use have gone through phases of excitement, then doubt and disappointment. This evolution follows the Gartner cycle shown in figure 1 , which describes the evolution of new technologies over time.
