A wooden house is a construction with a load-bearing wooden structure, the roof supported by a framework of horizontal or vertical wooden elements. Over the ages, several construction methods have become established, with the design of the building and the final aesthetic necessarily varying accordingly. Over the last few decades, the construction of wooden houses has benefited from major technical advances, both in the performance of the wood materials used, and in the comfort they offer to the dwellings; wooden dwellings are becoming lighter and more efficient. Add to this the recent emphasis on ecology and environmental concerns, and it's easy to see why the wood construction sector has grown steadily in recent years.
This article is the second in a series devoted to timber construction as a whole, describing the structural elements of timber-frame homes, their function and implementation, and highlighting their performance. The first article
