4. Stiffness and anti-roll damping

Throughout the previous sections, reference has been made to a roll axis and to anti-roll stiffness and damping. In this section, we'll deal specifically with this issue, to understand how suspension springs and anti-roll bars contribute to anti-roll stiffness. We'll follow the same approach for damping. This will enable us to see how we can modify the front/rear anti-roll stiffness distribution and thereby manage the load transfers highlighted in the previous section. Before that, we'll take a brief technological look at springs and dampers, followed by a paragraph on the notion of the roll axis.

It's worth noting, however, that the foregoing is considered solely from the point of view of vehicle dynamics. Spring-damper units contribute to vehicle comfort by smoothing out unevenness and even potholes in the road surface. In this respect, there may be a conflict...
