7. Volatile organic compounds

The foundry sector uses few solvents overall in its processes, but volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted from the degradation of the various additives involved (resins, carbon black, poteyages, etc.) during the manufacture of metal parts. Solvents are potentially used if parts are coated with paint.

7.1 General data on volatile organic compounds

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) include a multitude of substances, which may be of biogenic (natural) or anthropogenic (human) origin. The best known are toluene, ethanol, acetone and benzene, which are found in industry, most often in the form of organic solvents (e.g. in paints), to the exclusion of NMVOCs (Non-Methane Volatile Organic Compounds).
