1. Material constitution
Elementary particle physics has two closely related aims.
First of all, it looks for the ultimate constituents of matter to answer the question: what is the world made of? Secondly, it investigates the mechanisms that govern the interactions between its constituents. These questions, though ancient, are still valid today, and form the basis of a scientific approach whose most advanced form is particle physics (also known as high-energy physics).
