6. Initiation

6.1 Sensitivities

The sensitivity of an energetic material – i.e. its propensity to decompose under the effect of external stress, whether voluntary or not – is obviously an extremely important aspect.

Different sensitivity criteria are defined according to the type of stress considered (impact, shock, friction, temperature rise, etc.).

Example

A common device for measuring the sensitivity of an explosive to impact is to drop a calibrated mass onto a sample of the material. The higher the mass is dropped, the greater the probability of initiation. The drop height for which decomposition is observed with a probability of 50% is denoted h 50 ....
