2. Choice of mechanism

We're going to set out a number of criteria, and use them to sift through the three kinematically possible types of mechanism.

2.1 Break-even point

At dead center (infinitely small displacement of the output element) the gain in speed tends towards zero and the gain in effort towards infinity.

The 4-bar is the only one to offer this possibility. In figure 6 , when the mechanism is in position t, connecting rod 3 is aligned with crank 1 and crank 2 has reached its limit position. More on this later.
