These three standards share certain genetic traits resulting from the inbreeding of the three standardization groups whose starting point is ISA-88.

Although their points of view, terminology and levels of abstraction differ significantly, their approach to the structural and behavioral aspects of industrial systems is well articulated and consistent.

Reverse engineering of a metamodel has never been addressed by standards committees, which is what this section sets out to do. The interest in extracting a metamodel from these standards is twofold:
