1. Why trace products in logistics

It's difficult to render the Anglo-Saxon concept of "track and trace". "Track" encompasses the sense of tracking, for example a game animal, by knowing where the object to be traced has gone while it is still in motion. "Trace" makes it possible to determine, post facto, where an object has been, so as to establish, for example, whether it has been exposed to pathogens, or whether the cold chain has not been broken.

Let's take fresh produce as an example. When the produce is picked in the field, it's important to know which worker has touched the produce, for example if it turns out later that he has a contagious disease, or simply in order to pay him for his work and calculate the productivity bonus. It's also useful to know in which area of the field the produce was grown, as sunshine, fertilizers, drainage or even seedlings...
